We installed the first coral nurseries of Akumal in 2015 and have transplanted over 1000 coral fragments onto Akumal’s reefs using a variety of techniques since then. In 2017 we shifted the focus towards research and developing emerging techniques which helped us make the first registered observation of coral spawning in Akumal. In 2018 we received a small grant and logistical support from Coral Conservation Society to build the Akumal Coral Lab within the grounds of the Hotel Akumal Caribe.
Akumal’s Coral Conservation Lab hosts annual coral assisted fertilisation activities each summer. Site coordinator, Jenny Mallon, implemented the designs developed by CORALIUM in collaboration with SECORE international to install a low-cost facility to support coral reef restoration efforts.
